Super Coral

As reefs die off, researchers want to breed the world’s hardiest corals in labs and return them to the sea to
multiply. By harvesting the coral that has survived the increase in temperature and other conditions is it possible to create a new breed of coral that live in this changing environment?

“We’re trying to find the super corals, the ones that survived the worst heat stress of their lives,” said Dr. Cantin, a researcher with the Australian Institute of Marine Science in Townsville

This excellent article by the NYT discusses the science associated with genetically breeding a new strain of coral and what the benefits and potential disadvantages could be in the future.  Very good read in your are interested in what is happening to sustain our reefs.
