Endangered Species

What do the Reef Manta R, Giant Panda, Large Blue Butterfly, Arabian Oryx, Tasmanian Devil and the Echo Parakeet have in common?  The answer is that they are all on the endangered species list but the good news is they are starting to increase their population due to a lot of great efforts around the world.

Conservation Optimism Summit, to be held at Dulwich College, London, in April and at sister events in cities around the world, including Cambridge, Washington and Hong Kong. The summits have been organised to highlight recent successes in saving threatened creatures and to use these examples to encourage future efforts to halt extinctions of other species. The Giant Manta is an example of success.  Manta ray numbers were falling in Peruvian waters but after a ban on fishing, they are recovering.

Saved: the endangered species back from the brink of extinction from the Guardian is a very good read on the subject.
