Why Do Octopuses Remind Us So Much of Ourselves?

When you are scuba diving one of the hardest creatures to find is an octopus.  They can fit into a very small space, they prefer to come out at night, and when they do come out during the day, they can change colour to match their surroundings. They are smart, experiments starting in the 1950s and 1960s showed that common octopuses are good at tasks involving learning and memory—two attributes that we associate with intelligence.  And when they get scared they eject ink so that their predictors can't easily find them.  They are amazing creatures.  The National Geographic did a story on these amazing creatures in the family of Cephalopods which were among the first predatory animals to hunt in the ancient seas. A very good read - even if you only like to eat Octopus versus see them under water.
