How to Avoid Joining a Company with a Toxic Culture

No one wants to work for a company that has a culture that is toxic.  You know the ones where people spend more time gossiping, looking at how to "backstab" their colleagues or even worse.  A must read from Fast Company on the various ways you can test for a company culture before you accept that job offer.  These include: -

LOOK PAST THE SUPERFICIAL PERKS

SNOOP AROUND A BIT DURING YOUR INTERVIEW - the layout of the office, how the employees interact with each other

CHECK THE BATHROOM - is it clean?  and did the people who used it clear up after themselves

CONSIDER THE PACE OF THE RECRUITING PROCESS

ASK GENUINELY TOUGH QUESTIONS - and there is a great list of these in the article

CONSIDER DIFFERENT THINGS DEPENDING ON THE SIZE OF THE COMPANY - if it is a really small office a very friendly atmosphere is important maybe less so if you are a major corporation

TRUST YOUR GUT

An article that is well worth the read - whether you are looking for a new job yourself or wanted to make sure your culture is reflective of what you want it to be.
